The Foundations of War

Turn Your Bases into Realistic Battlefields with Ease.

No miniature is truly finished until its base matches the environment it’s fighting in. Stirland Mud is a specialized Technical paint designed to take the effort out of basing. Unlike standard paints, this is a thick, gritty paste containing micro-beads and texture grit that dries to a realistic, clumpy mud finish. It allows you to move away from messy glues and loose sand, providing a professional terrain finish straight from the pot.

Why Stirland Mud is a Hobby Essential

  • Instant Terrain Texture: With a single application, you can simulate everything from the churned-up earth of a No Man’s Land to the damp soil of a deep forest.

  • Superior Coverage: Because it is a thick paste, Stirland Mud is excellent for hiding the "seams" where a miniature’s feet meet the base, making your models look like they are actually standing in the environment rather than on top of it.

  • Realistic Dark Tone: It dries to a deep, chocolate-brown color that looks naturally damp. This dark tone provides a perfect high-contrast backdrop that makes the colors on your miniature stand out.

  • Basing and Weathering: While primarily used for bases, Stirland Mud can be applied sparingly to the tracks of tanks, the hems of cloaks, or the shins of walkers to simulate heavy, caked-on battlefield grime.

How to Master Stirland Mud

  1. Application Tool: Don’t use your best brushes! Use a dedicated Citadel Texture Tool or an old, stiff-bristled brush to scoop the mud out and spread it across the base.

  2. Vary the Depth: Apply it unevenly to create "clumps" and "puddles." This irregularity makes the ground look much more natural than a perfectly flat surface.

  3. The Drybrush Finish: Once the mud is completely dry (it may take a little longer than standard paint), give it a light drybrush with a tan or light brown like Tyrant Skull. This catches the grit and makes the texture "pop" under the light.
