The Scion of Ultramar

The Gold Standard for Realistic Skin Tones in Record Time.

Guilliman Flesh is widely regarded as one of the "magic" paints of the Contrast range. Named after the Primarch of the Ultramarines himself, this paint is specifically formulated to tackle one of the most daunting tasks in the hobby: painting realistic human skin. It bypasses the need for complex layering and glazing by providing a warm, healthy flesh tone, deep shadows, and subtle highlights in a single application. For anyone painting armies with exposed faces, bare arms, or barbarian hordes, this paint is an absolute necessity.

Why Guilliman Flesh is a Hobby Essential

  • Humanity in a Single Coat: Painting skin traditionally requires a base color, a wash, and at least two stages of highlighting. Guilliman Flesh achieves a "tabletop plus" standard in seconds, providing a convincing caucasian skin tone over a light primer.

  • The "Face-Saver": Faces are the focal point of any miniature but are notoriously difficult to paint. This Contrast formula naturally flows into the eye sockets, under the nose, and around the mouth, providing instant definition that makes facial features "pop."

  • Organic Transparency: Unlike traditional opaque paints that can look chalky, the Contrast medium remains slightly translucent. This mimics the way light interacts with actual skin, resulting in a much more lifelike finish.

  • Perfect for Gritty Realism: While it provides a healthy base, the pigment settles into muscles and sinews beautifully, making it the ideal choice for shirtless warriors like Chaos Cultists, Fyreslayers, or Poxwalkers.

How to Master Guilliman Flesh

  • Pick Your Undertone: Your choice of primer will dictate the "ethnicity" and warmth of the skin. Wraithbone creates a warm, sun-kissed look, while Grey Seer produces a paler, colder, or more aristocratic complexion. For a very bright, porcelain look, try White Scar.

  • Avoid Over-Brushing: Once you apply the paint, leave it alone. Going back over a semi-dry area will tear the pigment and leave ugly streaks. Apply it smoothly and let the chemistry do the work.

  • Watch the "Bubbles": Because skin surfaces are often small (like faces), tiny air bubbles can sometimes form in the recesses. Pop them with the tip of your brush immediately to ensure the "shadow" dries smoothly.

  • Advanced Tip: For added realism, once the Contrast layer is dry, you can apply a tiny dot of a traditional flesh highlight (like Cadian Fleshtone or Kislev Flesh) to the tip of the nose and the cheekbones.
