The Shadow of the Despoiler
The Foundation of Every Great Paint Job.
In the world of miniature painting, not all blacks are created equal. Abaddon Black is celebrated for its deep, neutral tone and its incredibly smooth, matte finish. As a Base paint, it is designed to be opaque enough to cover any other color in a single pass, making it indispensable for everything from painting the elite Black Legion to simply tidying up the edges of a finished model’s base.
Why Abaddon Black is a Hobby Essential
Total Opacity: Whether you are covering up a slip of the brush or painting the primary armor plates of a Black Templar, Abaddon Black offers a solid, void-like finish that doesn't look "grey" or "blue" when dry.
The "Tidy-Up" Tool: No matter how complex your paint scheme, you will always need Abaddon Black to "black-in" the areas between armor plates or to give your base rims that professional, clean finish.
Perfect for Mixing: Because it is a neutral black, it is the ideal tool for darkening other colors without drastically shifting their hue.
The Black Legion Standard: It is the mandatory starting point for Chaos Space Marines, providing a sinister, dark aesthetic that perfectly catches edge highlights.
How to Get the Most Out of Abaddon Black
The Base Rim: Nothing makes a model "pop" more than a clean, crisp black rim around the base. Use a slightly dampened brush to apply Abaddon Black as the very last step of your project.
Thinning for Recesses: Thin Abaddon Black with a little water to create a "pin-wash." Run it into the cracks between armor plates to create instant, deep shadows.
Highlighting Black: Since you can't "shade" black, you must highlight it. Use a chunky highlight of dark grey followed by a fine point highlight of a lighter grey to simulate light reflecting off black metal.
